Ab 1992 wurde die verbesserte Baureihe 112.1 von DB und DR gemeinsam beschafft. Die äußerlich auffälligste Änderung zur BR 112.0 ist die Zusammenlegung der großen Spitzen- bzw. Schlusslichter zu kleinen kombinierten Halogenlampen. Die Schnellzuglokomotiven mit einer Leistung von 4.000 kW und einer Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 160 km/h sind in ganz Deutschland vor Intercitys, Regional-Express- und Sonderreisezügen im Einsatz.
